Classic Post And Beam Homes

What can be more charming then classic post and beam homes? The elegance of exposed beams is compared to no other type of home. What many people do not know is that the post and beam structure has been used for hundreds of years; only in barns and stables, in fact, an authentic post and beam home is usually a renovated barn.

A post and bean home is defined as having huge timbers as supporting beams throughout the home and ceilings. Post and beam homes are not as popular today as they once were, however they are still popular among people who have a sense of history and architecture.

This is because of mass production of homes. In recent years, modern and prefabricated homes can be built in as little as one week. In the time it takes to build one post and beam home, several homes can be built using conventional methods.

Post and beam homes are really quite beautiful, and from a contractors standpoint, one of the strongest buildings ever to be built. They can withstand the elements and even natural disasters such as earthquakes. Because of its construction, a post and beam home can last hundreds of years.

In years gone by, men would work for weeks or even months to build classic post and beam homes. A post and home was constructed of beams and timbers and held in place with large wooden pegs. The pegs were made of hardwood, and were the predecessor to nails.

Today, the construction may be current, and materials used are modern day, however a post and beam home still states a beauty that no other home, prefabricated or otherwise, can offer.

In the past, post and beam homes were not energy efficient. However, today, post and beam homes can be made in the same way, adding energy efficient materials that will make it easy to heat in the winter and cool off in the summer months.

There are many different styles of post and beam homes; using the Internet to view the different styles. When you use the Internet, you will find millions of websites that have photographs of post and beam homes. These sites offer views of the interior and exterior of the classic post and beam homes and different views of what each room will look like.

The Advantages of Energy Efficient Pond Heaters

Author: Kirk rogers

Save Money Pond heaters can be expensive to run. Depending on the type of heater you own, the size of your pond and the length of time you have to run it on a yearly basis, your pond can end up costing a small fortune on top of your regular energy bill. Particularly with energy prices set to continue to rise over the next few years, it makes sense to make the switch now and to opt for energy efficient heating units which require less energy to produce the same effect and consequently allow the pond owner to save money on a recurring basis.

Save The Planet After a couple of centuries of pollution and exploitation, we've finally started to twig that our environment is suffering. One of the ways in which you can make a real difference is by buying and installing an energy efficient pond heater in place of your current model. Not only will it save you money in terms of the energy cost savings that will naturally occur through using less power, but you'll also help out the overall conservation effort by using less energy, which has the knock on effect of meaning more efficient production at power stations, which are a major source of pollution and consequently global warming.

Backup Source of Heat Heating your pond isn't usually optional - if you've got fish, chances are they'll need some heat to survive throughout the year. Most pond owners make the critical mistake of buying just one pond heater in the hope that that will be sufficient to tide them over. Rarely do they consider the need for heat in the event that their pond heater breaks down, or in some emergency circumstance. For that reason, it can often be a wise decision to opt for a backup heater - a job energy efficient pond heaters tend to do quite well. Think about it - you wouldn't risk your family with just one smoke alarm, would you?

Low Maintenance Modern, energy efficient pond heaters tend to be of a new generation of design. As well as encompassing beneficial optimum energy features, they also tend to require less in the way of maintenance, and seldom break down off their own accord, as compared to more traditional units which seem to fail far more regularly as a result of inherent design flaws, or simply age in some cases.

As if you need any more convincing, energy efficient pond heaters tend also, now, to verge on the cheaper side of the table, with other bulkier units actually more pricey. If you're considering buying a pond heater any time soon, make sure you weigh up your options regarding energy efficient models and the benefits they can bring to your pond and the environment, as well as the cost savings they can bring.

Computer Room Furniture

Author: T. Houser

A computer depends on the computer room furniture to bring out its maximum efficiency. The chair you sit on for sometimes hours at a time is also extremely important. Thus, it is important to spend some time on researching the different types of furniture available and if possible test it out before buying. Then you will be able to make an informed decision as a consumer on the proper furniture for your computer room.

Computer rooms are about as common in homes now as kitchens and bathrooms, thus it is important and necessary to be aware of the different types of computer room furniture available on the market today.

People that work at home are on the increase as well; therefore, they are another reason that computer room furniture is becoming more popular. When people are new home shopping, one of the most important questions they ask is where can the computer room be and how will the furniture fit and be arranged.

Computer room furniture must have several essential components. There must be proper shelves or surfaces to hold the processing unit, the keyboard and mouse, the monitor plus any other peripherals plus scanners and printers. There are some important factors to look at such as the level at which your monitor will be placed. It must be at a comfortable eye level that depends on your height. The keyboard and mouse must be on a shelf that rolls and it must be at an ergonomically correct level.

The computer's processing unit can be placed on the computer desk or on the floor out of the way as long as you can reach it to change disks without straining yourself. When selecting your computer room furniture the computer chair is one of the most important components. Before buying the chair, you must test it out in the store. It should be ergonomic, and your back should comfortably touch the back of the chair and your feet must reach the floor. Check out easily the chair can swivel and how convenient and comfortable the armrests are.

When doing your search and testing on chairs, it is not always the most expensive chair that is the best. The same goes for all components of computer room furniture. If you were dealing with a small room, it would be a good idea to measure out how much space you have and even prepare a drawing with exact measurements so that all your items will fit properly. Remember, if you are converting the room to an office, you may have such items as printers, scanners, fax machines and copiers.

If you are limited on the amount of space available then consider a tower cabinet to house all your computer components and peripherals. These cabinets are great space savers and they look good as well, and all your cables are hidden behind the tower.

The purchase of computer room furniture is an important decision, especially for someone who spends a great deal of time on the computer.

House Air Purifiers Vs Room Air Purifiers

Most people are at least aware of outside pollution and the problems it can cause. But did you know our homes pose as great a risk for pollution, or even greater. Everything from new carpet and paint fumes, radon gas, and dust and pet dander, as well as dust mites, can threaten our health and well being. For this reason, you might want to consider a house air purifier or the smaller room air purifier.

Whole house systems differ from room sized ones in that they utilize your home's air ducts and vents to clean the entire residence from one central location. By contrast, room systems clean a specific number of square feet within your house wherever they are placed. Most will clean between 250 and 500 square feet. Both of these types of air cleaners can provide additional purification options such as ultraviolet purification, HEPA filters, or filterless systems that utilize plates with opposing electrical charges to trap dust, dander, and other contaminants.

Each air filtration type has its advantages and disadvantages. The advantage to a whole house system is that you are assured of at least a basic level of cleanliness in the air you breathe, no matter what room you are in. You will not have to go around and clean five separate air filters, for example, to continue to assure that you are breathing clean air.

The disadvantage, of course, is that these central air filtration systems are more expensive both to acquire and to maintain than the individual room ones are. Cleaning jobs themselves can also be somewhat more intensive, as the filtration unit is quite a bit larger than those you handle with the room units. Some critics also believe that a whole house system is not as consistently effective throughout the home as strategically placed room cleaners are when used to cover a specific amount of square footage.

Another disadvantage to whole house systems is that if you don't own your home or are in an apartment, they are probably not appropriate for your situation. Because room purifiers do not connect into any central air ducts or vents, you can simply buy them and set them up, no installation needed. The disadvantage, of course, is that you will need to maintain several air purifiers instead of one central one. However, it may be that this maintenance is actually easier than with a very large central unit.

Whether or not you choose a whole house air purifier or several room air purifiers to clean the air in your home is up to you. With a home system, you are guaranteed at least a minimum clean quality of air no matter where you go in your house. Maintenance of this type of air filter may be a bit more intensive than with several room air filters, but you're also assured that you only have to do one cleaning when needed instead of having to maintain several room air filters.

In terms of cost, a filtration system for you house is going to be more expensive, comparatively, than will single units covering the same amount of square footage. Finally, critics of large units have said that they do not do as good a job at consistently maintaining air quality as individual room purifiers do. Depending on your needs and budget, it's up to you to choose which is best for you.

What Makes A Home Green?

Green is the new black, so to speak. Everybody is talking about going green and even building green. So what does it really mean to build green?

Defining green has been a challenge, even for those who are as green as you can get. To sum up green, the question would be - what type of environmental impact does the materials you are using have?

Assessing impact can mean on the front end or the back end. For example, in some instances, the product you use in building your home might not be green to build, but the results of that product can be beneficial. A good example would be if a window is installed in a way that maximizes the collection of low winter sunlight and blocks the summer sun, this saves energy and is green.

Because defining green is difficult, standards are starting to be organized and listed in the GreenSpec directory. This directory bases decisions about products on categories such as energy-consuming appliances and VOC-emitting paints, specific thresholds can be established relatively easily. But for many criteria, the lines are much fuzzier and judgment calls are required.

It is important also to note that multiple criteria often apply-in other words, a product may be considered green for more than one reason. Take recycled plastic lumber, for example: it's made from recycled waste, it's highly durable, and it can obviate the need for pesticide treatments. Straw particleboard products are made from agricultural waste materials, and they are free from formaldehyde off-gassing. A product with multiple benefits could qualify for GreenSpec on the basis of its overall environmental performance, even if it doesn't meet a threshold in any one category alone. Conversely, a product with one or more green attributes might not qualify if it also carries significant environmental burdens. For example, wood treated with toxic preservatives has advantages in terms of durability, but it would not be listed in GreenSpec due the health and environmental hazards it represents.

The primary intent with any green building products directory is to simplify the product selection process.

Another way to build green is to conform to what is called LEED Standards. LEED or 'The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design' is a Green Building Rating System™ that encourages and accelerates global adoption of sustainable green building and development practices through the creation and implementation of universally understood and accepted tools and performance criteria.

There are many resources available for consumers so that they can adapt their building materials and design to LEED standards. Building this way is probably the simplest way to go and there are many resources available to assist you.

So should you build green because it is popular? Not necessarily. You should build green because it is what will ultimately provide a 'green' future and not a black one.

Italian Kitchen Design

Author: Bruno Falconovic

Light spaces, sleek surfaces and a warm, inviting atmosphere - welcome to the world of Italian kitchen design. I'm going to quickly walk you through how to achieve an Italian style kitchen based on some fundamental design issues.

Let's start by talking about light spaces. Italian kitchen design is built around the concept of allowing enough natural light into the space to illuminate the whole room. No Italian would ever accept working in a dingy, dull space without any inspiration for creativity. The natural light will also warm up the space and add to the ambiance which we must create in order to design an Italian kitchen.

The surfaces of your Italian kitchen design will also have to be correctly chosen. Marble is the best material you can use as it screams out authentic Italian but is also beautiful and functional at the same time. If you can afford to get hold of marble worktops then you're at a massive advantage when it comes to crafting an Italian kitchen. These surfaces will perfectly reflect the light and open up the space brilliantly.

Another issue with surfaces is the space you leave between them. You need to create enough room for the whole family to work in because that's how an Italian kitchen will truly function. Cooking is a family activity in Italy and this is undoubtedly something that has attracted you to this type of design.

Italians have separate areas for everything in their kitchen. For example, they will have areas of their surfaces set aside for the sole purpose of chopping vegetables and meat. You'll find this to be really convenient if you cook a lot yourself, as in England we tend to cram everything in without contemplating preparation space.

Just by taking into account these three small notions you can put together a really interesting Italian kitchen design. Tread carefully though and maintain consistency with your choice of furniture and appliances. It all makes a difference.

Color Selection Tips

The color selection in our lives say something about us - from the clothes we wear to the car we drive. So choosing color for your room should be an easy one and I'd suggest you start with the room design concept. Do you want the room to feel energetic and dynamic or soothing and subdued? The choice of color will affect the feel in the room.

One place to start is the color wheel where you can pick out colors to create tonal or complementary schemes as well as accent color that will work with your base color. However, some people will find it hard to pin down the right color with the color wheel as they can't visualize the color for their room. In this instance, read on for more tips on color selection.

Another good resource to turn to are magazines; either in home décor or fashion. Scan through the photos and tear out the ones which appeal to you. When you've about 20 of so photos, start looking for a common thread in the photos e.g. there are flowers in every photo, everything is accented in green and blue etc. This exercise is an important indicator on the direction you may follow for a room's color selection.

Your wardrobe is another place to turn to for inspiration. Think about the color schemes of your room in a similar way and consider the tones and color you/re most comfortable with. Are they bright and vibrant or pale and muted? In the same way that you'd accessories yourself, think of how you'd accessories your room with cushions, curtains, carpets etc.

The fourth suggestion is to look at brochures or websites of paint or wall covering companies. Since they're selling you paint and color, these companies would have invested time and money to create color schemes that inspire and keep up with current home décor trends.

In general, the color schemes for home décor fall into 4 key categories:

1) Calm and neutral - represented by tonal shades of color like white
2) Warm - consists of reds, browns, oranges, yellows
3) Fresh - using reflective white with contrasting hues that are used in smaller amount
4) Vibrant - deep and rich color that can be overpowering if not carefully selected

Hence, it helps to corporate these colors into your home décor.

The Best Coffee Maker

Author: Alice Morgan

You cannot get a perfect tasting cup of coffee each day without the best coffee maker for you. Finding the right coffee maker is a matter of planning for your needs ahead of time. You need to include such preferences into your coffee maker choice as how fast you need your coffee made. You may also need to decide if you want the water and coffee heated separately or at the same time. Also, you need to know if it is important for you to have a clock-set model that will make your coffee for you at a set time each day. And, don't forget to measure the prospective coffee maker space on your kitchen counter to see what dimensions the coffee maker can be.

For some, a percolator is a nice choice for a coffee maker. For those who love their old-fashioned coffee and are not into any specialized coffees, a stovetop percolator or an electric percolator does everything they need. If you go with the stovetop version, be sure not to over-boil your coffee. Most people go with the electric percolator because it will sense when the coffee has brewed and switch over to warm mode.

Over the last several decades, the automatic drip coffee maker has been about the most popular. This is the kind where you just throw in the coffee bag and some water in the machine. The machine does the rest.

For many people these days, a coffee maker without a clock and timer function is just not worth having. People have grown to love waking up to the smell of fresh coffee each morning. All you have to remember to do is put in ingredients within the 24 hours before your wake-up coffee. The timed coffee maker will take care of the rest.

If none of these coffee makers do it for you, you are probably either a coffee aficionado, impatient, or you like specialized coffees. For the aficionado or the impatient, there are other coffee maker options such as a plunger pot, manual drip, microwave, or vacuum coffee maker. For those who like specialized blends, there are cappuccino makers and espresso makers. Nonetheless, there will always be one coffee maker that suits your taste and needs. Take your time to find that best coffee maker. It is worth it!

Home Decor for Comfort and Happiness

Author: Tess Tackett

With so many choices of home decor to choose from, the most important factor is making yourself comfortable and happy. Of course it's important to you to have an attractive and inviting home for your friends and visitors, but you're the one who matters most. After all, you do live there!

Color is a very important factor when choosing your home decor. Rich hues such as burgundy, navy, green and rustic colors tend to make a home feel warm and cozy, while lighter shades create an open and airy atmosphere. Red, black and gold as commonly used in Asian home decor is very bold and perfect for those with strong personalities who want their home to make a statement.

Country home decor and well as western styles use alot of the rich and rustic colors. Roosters, cowboy wall hangings, wooden western mirrors and candleholders all tend to have these shades in them. These warm hues are also frequently used in western style rugs, country kitchen towels, curtains and canisters.

The lighter, cooler shades mentioned above are often used in classical decor as well as shabby chic. With classical decor, the lines are usually smooth and uncluttered, with furniture ranging from white and linen to beige and brown tones. Light colored lamps, carpets and curtains are often used in this decor. Sometimes wall hangings contain bolder hues to add an interesting splash of color.

Light and airy colors are also used in shabby chic decor. There are several styles of shabby chic, but most use light colored furniture and accents with a distressed or worn finish. Delicate floral patterns are used in curtains and wall hangings, along with elegant distressed finish chandeliers, candleholders, plant stands and mirrors. The shabby chic look is romantic and charming.

Of course, whatever you feel comfortable with is fine. If an eclectic mixture of these styles is what you like, go for it! I have seen homes where each corner of the room had its own theme - nautical in one corner, porcelain dolls in another, with an overall country theme. It was absolutely breath-taking! So when it comes down to it, use whatever style of home decor makes you happy. Your guests will love it too.

The War Between DVD and HD DVD

DVD is a high-density optical disc. It is the acronym of Digital Video Disk also known as Digital Versatile Disk. It is designed for data and video storage. In the 1990s, the HDVT began to enter the market of removable storage devices. In 1993, two corporation groups were trying to make high-density optical storage standards. On one side, there was Sony and Philips, and the other group was headed by Toshiba, Time Warner, Hitachi and others. Sony started the two programmes for the application of UDO (Ultra Density Optical) and DVR Blue.

The War between DVD and HD DVD is on. The Digital Video Disk forum had a disagreement over whether to go with the more expensive Blue Rays or not. The proposed Blue Ray disc was expensive and physically different from the Digital Video Disks. As it was in the initial stage, so it was very much problematic also. To avoid a costly format war the Blue Ray Disc Association and DVD forum started to negotiate a compromise.

DVD and HD DVD differs in storage space. Later has a single layer capacity of 15 GB, dual layer capacity of 30 GB and 51 GB of triple layer disc. Former supports so many file systems such as UDF, ISO and others. The HD DVD player is required to play Dolby digital audio format AC3, Dolby Digital Plus and Dolby Digital EX and others. HighDef format supports a wide variety of resolution for the video to play.

Comparing DVD with HD Disc in terms of resolution will give better idea. Usually, a standard 4.7 GB Disk supports maximum resolution of 720x576. However, HighDefTV support starts from the 720p resolution.

The publisher wants to protect the HighDef content they may use the Advanced Access Content System (AACS). There is no Region Coding in the HighDef specification, which indicates that the titles from any country can be played in players of any other country. In Europe and other places, the consumers have used multi region players to play DVDs purchased in or from the US. HighDefs uses the HDI format for the interactive content. HDI is based on web technologies such as HTML, CSS and others.

The hybrid HD Disc format is the one to contain both DVD and HD Disc of the same movie in the single disc and give smoother transition for the studios. The Digital Video Disc replication companies are using the current production equipment with some minor alterations to change over to the format of HD Disc.

Microsoft supported both Digital Video Disc and HD disc. Xbox was shelved with a DVD drive. Xbox 360 contained HD Disc drive. The Microsoft HD Disc drive for Xbox 360 game console gives the Xbox 360 the ability to play the HD Disc movies. The Xbox 360 has an add-on HD Disc drive. It is used with a desktop or laptop PC running windows XP or windows Vista. The third party player software can play HD Disc movies using the add-on drive. So many buy the HD Disc add-on drives for the PCs due to its cheap price.

The major studios in North America along with Universal Studios have backed the HD DVDs strongly. The music groups back the HD DVD format in the music industry. Both conventional DVD and HD DVD have the same manufacturing process and protection. There are two types of hybrid formats, which contain standard DVD format video for playback in regular DVD players.

Circuit Breakers 101

There aren't a whole lot of people who spend time thinking about circuit breakers until something goes wrong with them. Most of us blissfully expect our home's circuit breakers to keep things running smoothly without any attention or help from us. Just to be on the safe side, it's worth taking a few minutes to learn more about how these systems work and how they are in place as a safety precaution as well as a modern convenience. Don't run to your circuit breaker and simply start poking around, read on for some general information that can come in very handy.

Every modern household has circuit breakers; there is no way to get around it. This system is in place to correctly and safely monitor the amount of electrical power that moves through a house. The safety mechanism goes into effect when a building or home has too much electrical current going through. The common term for this is tripping a breaker. The circuit breakers disrupt power to the house. While this can certainly be an inconvenience to live without electricity for a few moments, the safety feature helps to cut down on the risk of fire from electricity overload.

The basics for understanding circuit breakers, and how they work, lies in understanding voltage, current, and resistance levels. As something the average homeowner may not be completely aware of, voltage is the amount of pressure applied to an electric charge to make it move to the location needed. Moving onto the current - this term refers to the process of the speed and rate at which the charge moves through the conductor when measured at a specific point. Resistance is the adverse pressure applied to the charge as it passes through the conductor. The amount of resistance will depend on what the conductor is made of and its size. Nothing like going back to science class, is there?

All three of these components of circuit breakers are related. One can't be changed without the others being affected. The next time your circuit breakers trip, you will know the hows and the whys of the process and be able to address the situation informed.

The Beauty of an Adjustable Bed Frame

For many people watching television in bed is a relaxing way to end the day. However, getting comfortable was not always easy. With an adjustable bed frame, it is possible to both watch television in bed and be in comfort at the same time. They are also great for reading in bed as well. To operate it you simply use the handy remote control that comes with it.

An adjustable bed frame has several different settings that include raising the head up or down and raising the foot up or down. The controller has a memory function that will remember your favorite settings. Some even include a heated massage to help you relax and be comfortable. These types of beds are strong, flexible and durable. These were first introduced in hospitals so by the time they reached the general consumer you can be sure that they have been tested and improved thoroughly.

The benefits provided by an adjustable bed frame are very important to the health of many people. The even distribution of the body's weight allows for no extra strain or poor circulation.

Some features of an adjustable bed frame include a motor that is as quiet as a whisper, a wireless remote, a programmable remote control that remembers your favorite bed settings, a backup power system that allows the bed to return to a flat position in light of a power failure and a built in massage system.

There are several well-known brands of adjustable bed frames on the market today. Most of the manufacturers offer what is known as a split frame style. This allows for the independent adjustment of each side of the bed since many couples have different needs when it comes to sleeping patterns. This style of bed is considerably more expensive than a standard model though.

The top of the line adjustable bed frame would be the S-Cape it offers the most versatility. Take your time when shopping for this style of bed. It is a large investment and most people spend on average eight hours a day in bed, so you want to spend your money wisely and not make a hasty decision, especially if you experience aches and pains that are magnified by the type of bed you sleep on.

Since there are so many different sellers of adjustable bed frames it can get a little crazy when researching what to purchase. Consider what options are most important and try to narrow your search accordingly. If buying off the internet, make sure that there are no hidden costs and that shipping costs are provided up front.

Collectable Kitchen Plates for your Home

Collectable kitchen plates have been around for a long time. Your grandmother may have had a collection of antique or specialty plates. Decorating with these plates is one way to add interest to your rooms.

There are many categories of these collectables. Some of them were designed to be collected and some of them became more desired as their value and popularity grew. When these products were no longer available to be purchased new, they began to become prized parts of a collection.

More Valuable if the Design is No Longer Available

Some of these plates that started out as china to be used for dining are simple pieces. They may be blue cornflower, or have a hand-painted rose design. If the design is no longer available, they are valuable. Some are fancier but still considered as china. These may be embossed with the name of the place where they were used. It could be a restaurant, a hotel, a cruise ship, or even a plate used at government functions.

Other plates are designed with collecting in mind. These are the ones such as the Danbury Mint limited editions. There are special Norman Rockwell plates, and also from Currier and Ives. Of these latter, the Four Seasons group is quite popular.

Commemorative Plates

Some plates are made to commemorate a specific event. You will find some celebrating the bicentennial of the United States, city and church founder's day, Mother's Day and Christmas. Some of these may have a special significance to you. For example, there are times when someone will make or have made plates commemorating the day of your wedding. These are precious items that you will want to display proudly.

Many people like to gather kitchen plates when they visit tourist locations. Others like to get ones that have been acquired years ago and buy them as antiques. Either way, they are or will become collectable. You can get plates from locations like the Grand Canyon, Niagara Falls, Yellowstone Park, the Royal Gorge, Pike's Peak, or other scenic places. These often have a picture of the tourist site on the front. A similar type that is of interest to tourists is the state-themed plate.

Old-Fashioned Collections

There are certain old-fashioned items that have come down through many generations. Many of them are still being made today, but usually they are not as elaborate. One of these types is the recipe plates. These are generally made of porcelain. They have an actual recipe painted on the front. The recipes are real and if you follow the directions, you will have a cake or salad that is easy and flavorful. The other type is the prayer plates. These are also elaborate, often gold rimmed, and have a kitchen prayer painted on their fronts.

Collectable kitchen plates can make your cooking area come alive. They are reflections of your personality and they radiate charm. Hang them on your walls, or put them on plate stands. You will find that after awhile, they will start to seem like old friends.

Roundup for Bermuda Grass Lawns

If winter weeds are giving your bermuda grass lawn a scruffy look, you may want to consider an application of Roundup. Normally, the thought of spraying your lawn with Roundup (or any other brand of Grass & Weed killer) may seem like a very bad idea. Because Roundup kills both broadleaf weeds and grasses, application during the growing season would likely have catastrophic effects on your lawn. But Roundup will only harm those plants which are green and growing. While still in it's winter dormant state, the brown bermuda grass visible atop of the ground is already quite dead. Meanwhile, safe and warm underground, the roots are very much alive and patiently awaiting spring time. Applying Roundup now to your dormant brown bermuda will kill only those unwanted weeds and grasses which have begun to take over and ruin that nice clean lawn.

Timing is everything! One spring day, a friend of mine told me he had just finished spraying his lawn with Roundup. I thought this to be strange because at least a week earlier my own bermuda lawn had begun to show signs of green-up. As I suspected, my friends lawn suffered damage as a result of his late spraying. Remember, Roundup will kill anything that is green. Bermuda grass must be completely dormant when Roundup is applied. A little bit of green bermuda down near the ground can absorb the chemical and carry it down to the roots. After only a few warm days in early spring, your bermuda may begin to show signs of life. Therefore, before spraying, you must be certain that your bermuda is totally free of any green. It is not good enough to stand back and gaze at your yard. Get down on all fours and pick through the grass with your fingers. Look carefully at the grass down near the surface. Check several different areas to ensure the entire yard is dormant. Alternatively, a great way to ensure that your bermuda is lifeless- spray a couple days after a hard freeze.

Whether you spray with a low volume pump-up sprayer or the water hose attachment type, always calibrate your sprayer before you begin. I like to utilize my driveway for calibrating. I step off a 40 foot section of the driveway, which is 25 feet wide. This gives me a 1000 square foot area for calibrating. Using only water, I spray on an even application to the area. The driveway works great for this as I can see precisely where I've sprayed. Now I have very accurately determined how much volume I will apply over a 1,000 sq.ft. area. It's very important to always follow the chemical's label instructions for rates of application.

Be patient. Remember Roundup is a slow-working herbicide. You will not begin to notice results for at least seven to ten days after application. But the results will be worth the wait. By cleaning up your lawn early, you'll get a jump on your neighbors going into the spring. As your clean, beautiful bermuda grass lawn begins to green up, you can sit back and admire it with pride. Meanwhile your neighbor will be busy pulling weeds.

Cool Arm Chairs

Arm chairs and sofas are often what people have, and there is very good reason for that. They have worked well and there is no need to change, though they do change in style and comfort as time goes on. A good chair is worth its weight in gold for many reasons.

Some guests strongly prefer the arm chair to the sofa because it allows them to sit alone. Some like this, and others do not, but those who are not close friends or family often don't like to be too close to someone they don't know right away. Many gravitate towards the arm chair for that very reason, even if they don't really realize what they are doing. It is an unconscious and completely understandable need to have personal space. There are many times when family members need this personal space as well. That is why most family rooms have a sofa and a few chairs rather than just two sofas.

The best thing about arm chairs is that they are often more comfortable than they look. If you look at them in the store, you can never tell how they are going to feel until you have sat down to try it out for yourself. Some of the ones that look rather stiff and unforgiving actually end up being the best. They may have great support for the back while still leaving the sitter feeling as if they are sitting on a cloud of softness. You should never judge an arm chair on looks alone. Some that look comfy or stylish are not as well.

The price of arm chairs will vary, and the price usually has a lot to do with how they look, but more importantly it might reflect how comfortable they are to sit in. The sole purpose of the chair is to have somewhere to sit, and no one wants to sit on something that is hard on the body and is not relaxing. This is why children don't sit in arm chairs are school. If they were too comfortable they would not be paying attention in class. We'd have a nation of sleeping children if they got extremely comfortable chairs for school. However, when they get home, the comfort of a good chair might be just what they need to unwind.

Because the quality of your basic TV and DVD player, you just wished you had your own home theater system!

Once you realizing that a home theater is not just for the rich and famous, it is affordable to even the most lowest of budgets more or less its essential piece of home equipment. So you look into it - and you are amazed at the amount of knowledge requires a steep learning curve.

Having basic furniture that is cinema themed makes your home theater a better home theater. But before acquiring any furniture take a thought to the size of the viewing room and then determine the basic furniture you will need such as chairs and television cabinet, but other enhancements may be added.

To stop unwanted dust and grime clogging up your system it is to your advantage to keep your equipment in properly designed furniture. For example: Put the television in a television cabinet - this will add more life your system and save you big bucks later.

With all the choices you have to make to get your hands on a home theater, obtaining a specialist designer could add to the possibility of a more pleasing and entertaining home theater system.

Summary

If you are not fussy about the quality and enjoyment that you can reach from your own home theater, them my suggestion is purchase the very basic and cheapest system you can afford.

However, anybody who enjoys the thought of coming home after a long hard day, switching on their home theater and get "right into" the movie would really appreciate a well designed home theater that is properly set up.

For example setting up the speakers is not as easy as it seems, properly set up surround sound will make forget you're inside your viewing room as though you in a movie theater itself, but alas a speaker system not of high quality is not only frustrating to the ears, but you lose all ambience as well.

You can avoid this kind of "distress", and enhance your enjoyment of attaining a real home movie theater by having comfort with the adding home theater furniture and if you can't make the right choices a professional home theater designer will help your design for enjoyment.

Designing A Victorian Living Room

Victorian era is popular for its decorations and motifs that are elaborate and intricate. Because of its sophistication and elegance, many establishments, restaurants, hotels and even houses prefer this style to their main features.

If you want to create a stunning Victorian living room of your own, you must be very particular about ornate designs to produce dramatic visual effects.

The major consideration in designing a Victorian living room is the colors to be used. Colors that can be used can either be light or dark depending on the aura and ambiance the owner of the house wishes to achieve. If you would opt for vibrant colors, make sure that you use them in dark and rich shades to create a feeling of depth and warm atmosphere. If you prefer lighter colors, make sure that you choose influential shades to recreate a Victorian ambiance.

The next consideration should be the patterns to be used. Before, owners of Victorian homes are quite eager to cover all surfaces available especially on their walls. To recreate a Victorian living room, come up with a wall that has intricate treatments and style and add the same textures and patterns used in the wall to the pieces of furniture to be used and to the floor as well as in the windows or ceiling. The most common patterns used may include scrolled floral patterns and Gothic-inspired trellises. Adding deep earth colors along with detailed designs on embossed papers that are stenciled, sponged, marbled, or spattered, can emphasize these patterns.

Next, the decorations and decors to be used should also be planned carefully. In designing Victorian living room, you must always be ready for the excess. Since this theme is quite popular for its intricate decorations and elaborate motifs, you should buy extra pieces of everything you wish to put to avoid ruining the entire theme. The staple decorations should include huge sweeping pieces that have complex designs, heavy fabrics that bear elaborate patterns, pieces of stained glasses and china pieces, large and deep-colored flowers, and intricate designed laces. Also include fireplaces made of marble, heavy mirrors that come in gold tones and hues, intricate cornices in the ceiling, elegant door pediments, and large chandeliers.

And, to complete the mood, make sure that you include pieces of furniture that exude romanticism, drama, and elegant sensuality. Woodcarvings in mahogany that come in velvet adornments are perfect for this.

Three Reasons to use a Bath Rug

Author: John James

Do you have a bath rug in your bathroom? If so, you know that there are many benefits that this brings to your home. But of course, if you have never used a bath rug you may not be aware of what it can do for you. It is hard to imagine that a relatively inexpensive item could add so many benefits to your bathroom. But when it comes down to it that is exactly what a bath rug can do for you.

So what are the benefits of using a bath rug? What are the reasons that so many people have decided to do this in their home? Listed below are three of the most common reasons that you should consider using a bath rug in your bathroom. If these reasons do not sound good enough, maybe your bathroom is just fine.

1. The number one reason to use rugs is the functionality that it will add to your bathroom. What does this mean, you may ask? Simply put, this gives you a place to step once you get out of the bathtub. Although you may have a bath mat, having a bath rug underneath is always a great idea. This way, you can be rest assured that 99 percent of the water from your body is not going to hit the floor. And while this may not seem like a big deal, it can help to keep your floors in much better shape.

2. A bath rug is a great way to bring color and excitement to your bathroom. If your bathroom needs a new look, there is no better way to do this than a basic bath rug. You will find bath rugs in a wide variety of colors and sizes, which all but ensures that you will be able to find what is right for your room. It may not be the best reason to use a bath rug, but the way that it will make things look is a definite advantage that you should keep in mind.

3. Simply put, a bath rug is much more comfortable than stepping onto hard floors. No matter what your bathroom floors are made of, it is safe to say that they are not going to be comfortable to stand on. But with a good size bath rug, you can make sure that your feet are always comfortable. Again, this may not be the best reason to buy, but it is one that you should keep in mind nonetheless.

These are three of the best reasons to add a bath rug to your bathroom. If you have never used one of these, you are probably not aware of how much you can benefit from them. For a relatively inexpensive price, you should not have any problems finding a bath rug that looks good, feels good, and offers a lot of functionality.

Great Budget Bathroom Ideas

We all spend a lot of time in our bathrooms, well most of us do. My teenage son avoids the bathroom as much as possible for some reason. Anyway normal people really enjoy cleaning themselves in the bathroom. This is a very personal space where we feel at home to undress and carry out many beauty regimes. Bathrooms need to make us feel secure, warm, relaxed and also comfortable. They should also be very inviting and quite sophisticated so that they are beautiful.

However to have a bathroom that is comfortable, sophisticated and inviting can cost an arm and a leg, which is why we've put together some great tips for doing fantastic bathrooms on a budget. You can get some great deals if you know where to look. The tips that we look at are bound to give you a wonderful bathroom which makes you feel right at home. You could also ask your friends for recommendations when you are considering upgrading your bathroom.

Accessorize

Accessories are quite cheap when you compare them to new fixtures for example. It is possible to refresh the look of your bathroom by changing some of your dated bathroom accessories such as rugs, shower curtains or even just buying a new set of towels. These things will immediately make your bathroom feel new and inviting even if you don't change anything else. It's always worth taking time to choose these items as they really can change everything about the room.

Another way to update your bathroom on a shoestring is to change small subtle things. You don't have to change the whole color scheme to make a difference, you could just change the color of the bin for example, or even the towel rail.

Applying themes to your bathroom may appear tacky to many people, however they can work very well if done tastefully. You could turn your bathroom into an ocean oasis for example. You can choose accessories to complement this theme. You should be imaginative and open to trying new ideas and techniques when updating your bathroom.

Painting

Last, but certainly not least you could always consider painting. Paint isn't that expensive, who knows you may even have some knocking around in the garage. If possible buy new paint that compliments the colors of your accessories that you have just brought. You ideally want to tie everything together.

It is possible to update your bathroom on a budget, you just have to be careful and keep your eye on your budget so you don't risk overspending. Start shopping around now to get some ideas for your bathroom.

How To Measure A Straight Stair Lift

Author: Robin OBrien

Installing a straight stair lift is easy and most people with a small amount of DIY experience can install one in only a few hours. However, many people are unsure about purchasing a straight stair lift because they don't know how to accurately measure their stairs so that they can feel confident when ordering one. However, measuring is not that difficult and can be done in about 5 minutes.

You can save a great deal of money is you buy and install a straight chair lift yourself. Even if you have the dealer install it for you, you can still sometimes save money if you give them the measurements beforehand; some agents make a charge for a pre-sales, on-site inspection.

Taking measurements is quite straight forward; there's not that much to it. The measurements are few and very easy to take. These machine are specifically designed to tolerate slight differences, meaning that things like carpet runners will not make a difference, so don't worry. Just follow the measurement instructions step by step and you'll be fine. You'll need a pen, paper and a measuring tape that can extends to the full run of your stairs.

Stand at the bottom of the stairs, look up, and decide which side of the stairs the lift will be mounted on. Most staircases run along a wall and most people prefer that the track also run on that side of the stairs: the track is actually fixed to the stair tread and never the wall. Small obstructions like handrails shouldn't be a problem as stair lifts are designed to clear these obstacles. This is the first and most important measurement.

For the next measurement, stand at the top of the stairs, and extend the measuring tape so that it lies on each of the stair treads - it should run parallel to the skirting board. You may find this easier to do if someone lends a hand. Take note of the measurement when the measuring tape touches the floor at the bottom of the stairs.

The next step is to measure from the edge of the top step to the edge of the first step - the tread. The next step is also simple enough. You just need to measure the width of the staircase. If there is a wall or door at the bottom of the stairs, measure the distance form the bottom step to the wall or door. This will tell the stair lift company how much clearance is needed.

The above measurements are the basic requirements that a stair lift company will need to supply you with the correct straight stair lift. Certain brands and models of may require more specific measurements to get a sense of space. If this is the case, the stair lift company will have instructions for any additional measurements needed. The company will usually supply you with graphs or easy to follow instructions, making measuring for your new straight stair lift an easy and simple process.

If you have any doubts you can request a survey from a reputable stair lift company. You can find these companies on the web and many will make no charge for an onsite survey regardless of whether you buy a straight stair lift or not.

Common Exterior Paint Problems

Peeling Paint:

Another common symptom of a failed paint coat is when the paint peels off from the surface. The paint may commonly appear to curl and flake from the work surface for a number of reasons. Most commonly, the peeling occurs because of poor paint adhesion, due to improper prep work or lack of primer.

Before any new paint is applied to the exterior of your home, the surface must have the necessary "roughness" for the paint to grip to. Sanding and/or applying a layer of primer is sufficient to provide this "roughness."

Efflorescence:

This condition most commonly occurs on painted masonry surfaces, such as brick or concrete. Efflorescence appears as crusty white salt deposits emerging through the paint film. This situation transpires when salts in the brick or concrete become dissolved with water, and then attach to the surface as the water evaporates.

Some common causes of paint efflorescence include moisture emanating from indoors, inadequately waterproofed below-ground walls, and poor surface preparation. If basement walls are not adequately waterproofed, ground water may penetrate the paint and induce efflorescence. Cracks in walls and other water damage are also common causes. If the concrete or mortar was not entirely cured and dried out when the paint was applied, or if prior efflorescence was not entirely removed before the last paint job, the condition may materialize.

Mildew/Mold:

Another common symptom of failed paint is the appearance of mildew and mold. Mildew is easily recognized as dark green, brown, or black splotches on the paint surface, and is usually found in damp, shaded areas. Mildew is actually a living fungus which feeds and grows on paint film.

Mold spores can float through the air and form new colonies where they land. Mold and mildew have been found to cause several health problems, such as chronic fatigue, sinus problems, respiration problems, sleep difficulty, and an impaired immune system.

Mildew and mold is most commonly caused by heavy moisture, poor ventilation, and lack of sunlight. A combination of these conditions will provide an ideal habitat for mold and mildew to thrive and grow. Some of the most common areas on the exterior of your home where mildew may grow include the underside of soffits, eaves, and similar shaded areas.

Chalking:

Paint chalking occurs as a formation of fine powder on the surface of the paint film. Chalking paint will rub off of the surface and get on to skin, clothing, etc. Chalking paint can also have a fading effect on the paint coat. Chalking is actually a natural cleanses process of paint, however, excessive film erosion can result in heavy chalking.

This problem is typically caused by the use of a poor quality paint, or the use of an interior paint on the exterior of the building. Before applying a new coat of paint, be sure to fully remove any excess chalk from the surface. Primer may also be needed.

A True American Wood

No matter where you want to add a rustic country look, pine furniture is the answer. It is as popular as it has ever been, and is less expensive than other wood furniture. Pine furniture is preferred by furniture makers because it is easier to work with and more pliant than most other woods. Solid pine furniture is durable and beautiful, and an excellent value. It will easily add warm, casual and even elegant appeal wherever it is used.

Solid woods are classified as either hardwoods or softwoods, but the description is based on the tree's foliage rather than the strength of the wood. Solid pine furniture is durable and beautiful, and an excellent value. It is light in weight, has straight grains and offers resistance to swelling or shrinking. Pines have been used for centuries to build furniture for both indoor and outdoor use in the United States and England. Solid hardwood furniture like pine can also be repaired if damaged because there is no veneer or artificial surface that can be scraped or rubbed through.

Pine grows quickly and is an inexpensive wood in the production of indoor or outdoor furniture. Thus, pine furniture can offer excellent value for your money. It is also among the most commonly finished or painted types of furniture, which means you'll have many finish options to choose from if you purchase your furniture unfinished. As a matter of fact, most manufacturers suggest that all pieces of both indoor and outdoor pine furniture be finished once it is received. Paint (either latex or oil based) is a standard choice of many regardless of the furniture's final use. Alternate choices for interior use include hand waxed or lacquer finishes, which are great looks for rustic, country rooms. For furniture that is to be used outdoors however, it is strongly recommended that penetrating, oil-based water repellents that have UV protection and mildicides be used to finish the wood's surfaces. This finish is important to protect the furniture from the elements and should be repeated periodically to maintain the natural qualities and beauty of the wood.

As with any non-paint finish, results may vary somewhat as the absorptive characteristics of the pine wood may vary considerably from piece to piece. It is therefore recommended that you apply a wood conditioner to the pine just before staining. Many prefer these variations, however, and choosing amongst a wide variety of finishing products that show the wood's graining: lacquer, oil, paste, stain or color wash (also known as pickling) can emphasize very different shades of wood texture and thereby add immense interest to your home's decor.

The quality of pine furniture can vary widely. Although pine is more pliable than most hardwoods, pieces can last for decades if it is constructed well. Therefore it is important to do your homework before making your furniture purchase. Knots should be expected and can be attractive in a piece of furniture, but watch out for knots that create a hole in the furniture. Too many knots can weaken the piece. Manufacturers and sellers of quality pine furniture know this and take care to avoid using and selling such pieces. Although pine is a very sturdy wood, it can easily be dented and scratched (as can cedar and other outdoor-use woods.) Like all woods, pine will warp when exposed to constant humidity or moisture if not finished. When finished, however, it is very stable. Well-crafted pine furniture will be smooth to the touch, solid and sturdy.

The Latest In LCD TV

Liquid Crystal Display is all about flat panel television technology. The technology of liquid crystal display has penetrated our everyday life in everyday things like wristwatches, mobile phones, calculators, computer monitors and high definition television. The use is growing rapidly and sales of LCD TV are expected to exceed 4 million in America alone.

There are some distinct advantages of LCD panels over other kinds of display technologies. They are slimmer and hardly go beyond 3.5`` in depth. These are lighter also and best of all they draw less power - only about 60% of the power consumed by plasma displays. These televisions do not spew electromagnetic waves that are harmful.

There are drawbacks of course - viewing angle is restricted, contrast ratio is limited and time of display response may cause concern. The biggest frown of all is caused by the price. Although it is falling but still it is considerably higher than its plasma counterpart.

LCD displays comprises mainly of sheets of polarized glass sheets - two in number. A liquid crystal solution is sandwiched between these. These liquid crystals are very specific that causes them to act as shutters that open or shut out entry of light as the need arises depending upon flow of electric current. This current passing through the liquid crystals is regulated by voltage that is applied between the glass sheets through the electrodes that are transparent. These form a network having rows on one direction of the panel and columns on the other side representing the pixels or picture elements.

What are these liquid crystals? Matter can be found in three states - solid, liquid and gas. Nevertheless there are substances that exist in a state that is neither liquid nor solid at any one point of time. The behaviour of these molecules is also peculiar. They keep to their orientation like those in a solid and yet they shuffle around taking up various positions like the molecules of a liquid. Thus these liquid crystals can be termed neither solid nor liquid though they have more of an affinity for the latter - that is the liquid state.

There are various types of liquid crystals with each having its distinct properties. Those used in LCD panels are termed nematic-phase liquid crystals. The molecules are arranged in a particular fashion having distinctive pattern.

LCD display systems are of two types - passive and active matrix. The former is more complicated, produces the best pictures and consequently the price also goes up. During the manufacturing stage bad-pixels pose a serious problem. Innumerable controlling transistors are required on the glass substrata to control each sub-pixel. A typical wide screen panel will require 3.1 million transistors. Any one faulty transistor cannot be replaced and are known as dead or stuck pixels. If one is permanently off then a black spot will show and if it is on then a white spot will show. If it crosses a certain number the whole unit will have to be discarded.

It was during the early 2000`s that LCD flat panels took over the television market from the typical CRT`s. The basis of the technology is founded on the characteristics of polarized light. The thin semi liquid crystal gel trapped between two slim polarized sheets is divided into pixels.

There is hectic activity to overcome the technological difficulties to make the set affordable. So the LCD TV has to be made affordable to hit the headlines of success.

Wood furniture from Costa Rica

Author: Ana Arata

Costa Rica offers different styles of furniture and many options of woods to choose from. In this country, wood is still affordable and attainable. Among the different types of woods used for furniture are Guanacaste, Cedar, Cenizaro and Melina among others.

One of the most important things to watch for when buying wooden furniture is the treatment that the wood has had prior to manufacturing. This, because Costa Rica has many different climates and the wood that is used for manufacturing in the Central Valley sometimes might shrink or expand when the items are transported to the coast, for instance. The high temperatures along with the dry climate of Guanacaste, sometimes causes wooden items to crack or expand. Also, there are manufacturing companies that offer nice styles of furniture and at reasonable prices with treated and dried woods under high standards. We have an interesting catalogue of Costa Rican made furniture that most of our clients love to check. Visit our website at www.pacifichomefurnishing.com for pictures and prices of Costa Rican made furniture.

Another good option is teak wood. This furniture is of recent manufacture in the country because this wood has not been in the market for so long. Most teak in Costa Rica is used for outdoor furniture. In order to get aged teak furniture you need to look at Indonesian imported items that sometimes are not so bad in price considering the beauty of carvings and the quality of the woods. The balance in price is given by the low cost of labor in those countries compared to Costa Rican labor. Of course the items pay duties but you might be surprised to find pieces at bargain prices from certain suppliers.

Comfort is not one of Costa Rican furniture pluses. We usually recommend imported items when our clients need couches or sofa beds due to the quality and density of foams found here. Some custom manufacturers do a good job in sofas but we prefer to advice on imported items because the price is similar and sometimes lower compared to the items locally produced.

Among the wood furniture that is mostly produced in Costa Rica are beds. With beds you will find something very different from the usual in the United States. Most beds in Costa Rica don´t take box springs. Instead, they have a platform that serves as a base and makes the bed very firm. This reduces the cost of the bed because you don´t need to buy box springs and you avoid bugs eating your box springs. One interesting item that we sell a lot is the carved wood beds. Local manufacturers carve the figure of the animal you want. This way, people who live in the ocean like carving sail fish, turtles, etc. in their beds and also in the drawers of their nightstands.

Most of the wood manufacturers are located in the Central Valley, near San Jose, Grecia and Alajuela. They have a culture of working the wood and expertise in manufacturing. Some of our clients want to have custom made items from a magazine but using the local woods and our manufacturers will make anything they want. For their surprise, they usually accomplish what they want at very reasonable prices.

Rough Venetian Plaster

If your walls seem to be a little rough and you are thinking of wallpapering them, there are a number of things which you should keep in mind. The first is that if you try to wallpaper over the rough wall, it will not go on properly and the results will not look good. This means that you have a few choices to make.

You can either place a liner on the wall yourself or pay a professional to do everything for you. Obviously doing it yourself will save time and money and it is not overly difficult to do either.

Preparing Rough Walls for Wallpaper

Now it is only really a good idea to do this yourself if the walls are not too rough. If they are then you may need to hire a professional. If they aren't too rough then adding a liner onto the wall is the first step to preparing it. This will mute the texture and give you a smooth surface on which you can add the wallpaper to.

Skimcoating the surface with a drywall joint compound is the best idea though it will require some amount of patience and time. Firstly you will need to remove any paint which is scaling on the wall as well as grime, dirt and dust which may have built up over time. Any water stains should also be sealed with an oil based stain killer. If you have chosen to wash down the walls then you will need to ensure that you take off any soap and cleanser type residue before you begin your work.

If the wall is slightly too rough then it may be a good idea to try and knock off some of the really rough bits. This can really help to reduce the number of coats of mud that you may need and therefore it saves you money as well as time. Once you have done this you will then be ready to start on the walls properly and in order to do this you will need some all purpose compound.

Usually the wall will need to have at least two coats of the all purpose compound on it, but it really depends upon how rough the wall is. If it is overly rough then it will need more coats. The tools which you will need to help you to prepare the walls include a mud pan and a 10-12 inch broad knife.

When it comes time for the skimcoating you will need to ensure that all the strokes that you do all go in the same direction. For example, when you are doing the first coat it may be easier to go horizontally. However if you do choose to go horizontally then you will need to make sure that each stroke is horizontal for the whole wall. Once you have finished the wall allow it to dry before applying another coat. For the second set of strokes it may be a good idea to go vertically. This will help to give an even coating.

Finally you will need to sand down and to do this you may find it easier to use a medium grit sanding sponge. Once you have done this you should then add a drywall sealer/primer before eventually trying to wallpaper. It really is as simple as that!

Author: Tess Tackett

If you're the type who likes a relaxed and comfortable look and feel for your home, country and western decor is something you should definitely consider. Although these are two separate styles, put them together and you will have a spectacular mix!

Country decor has always included such accents as roosters and cows, anything that is associated with a farm. Western decor typically includes cowboys, indians, horses and things of that nature. Where do cowboys normally work and live? On a farm! You can see how the two go hand in hand - a match made in Heaven!

Color is another aspect these two styles share. Country and western decor both use an abundance of rustic colors, such as deep reds, denim blues, golds and burnished orange. Combining these two styles is extremely easy since the colors already blend.

All you need to get started are some shelves and curio cabinets to display your horse figurines, roosters, cowboys, indians and any other western decor you may have. Add some rooster statues, gingham lined baskets, a few ceramic cow accents here and there and you are well on your way to creating a warm, welcoming atmosphere that everyone will love!

Decorating your walls is another easily accomplished task. There are many western wall decor items available, from mirrors embellished with sheriff's type stars to canvas cowboy art and western wall sconces just to name a few. Basement Bar Idea

Designing a basement bar idea is one of the most desirable things you, as a house owner, can do for your den. Especially when you got lots of friends who like to party on weekends, you can have your basement as an alternative venue. Even for just the simple joy of hanging out, the basement is a perfect spot.

What makes a basement more enjoyable to hangout with is when you know people like it too. Having an idea and turning it into a reality is one thing that gives you that sense of fulfillment. The conversation doesn't seem to end. Here are some things you need to set it up.

1. Sink. Install your sink in a corner near your plumbing system. This is will make it easier to install. Since all ends of the plumbing system in your house leads to the basement, might as well set up your mini bar there. Your wet bar is where you wash stuff or drain all excessive spills into the sink.

2. Liquor shelves. Having a liquor shelf in your basement bar is essential since you'll be serving drinks in the room. Place your liquor shelf in an area where the temperature is consistent. This will help as most of the wine and other liquor types are temperature regulated. A basement bar idea can never be complete without this.

3. Keg, cooler, and a refrigerator. Consider installing a beer keg shelf under your bar if you're thinking about serving beer. It's safe and it's easy to manage. Some bar units have a built-in keg cabinet. An alternative to the beer keg is a cooler to put your beer bottles in. However, coolers can also be messy after the party. If you don't like coolers or keg, put a mini ref in your basement bar. But these are also must haves for a basement bar.

4. The bar. Obviously, a basement bar can't be without the bar! You have a choice of building your own. Some carpentry skills and a little time in your weekend schedule is what you basically need. This is most practical when your budget is tight. However, if cash is not a concern, buy one. There are a lot of different types of bars that suits your basement bar idea to choose from.

5. A bartender. Add an experienced bartender to your basement bar. However, this can add to your overhead cost. If you have a friend who knows how to mix concoctions, send him in. But if you don't, the next best option is to study this art of mixing drinks. The fun part is when the party begins. Having this is your plan completes your basement bar idea.

Some basement bars can be quite a well-designed that they don't even look like basement at all. The designs are so good you might think it's a bar in a hotel restaurant. The point is that all you need is a good and clear vision of how your bar should look like. Your basement bar idea is your key to make it happen. When it's done you'll be the envy of your friends and neighborhood.

Believe it or believe it not it is suggested amongst the experts out there that clutter can prevent a good night sleep. It is a known fact that the human brain likes to be organized. Unfinished business from your day can occupy your mind during the night. So one could draw the logical parallel that clutter in your room could lead to sleepless nights You may take that with a grain of salt but I just wanted to put it out there.

The bottom line is this, if your room is neat and tidy it will allow for more space. Since you will spend a lot of time in this room - I think you would agree that it is wise to design it with peace and relaxation in mind.

In terms of bedroom decorating ideas you will be pleased to know that there are many publications online or offline that offer all sorts of ideas. The main thing you need to do is decide first on functionality then on design.

Relaxing colors can be helpful. A bright yellow may not be a good idea. The main objective is to make sure that the color is relaxing to the eye.

Rather than paint you may choose to go with wallpaper. There are lots out there to choose from. Again just like the paint you want softer more relaxing colors. Along with that you want to incorporate a little style. Do research and shop around.

There are lots of home improvement shows also that can help you generate ideas. With that said don't overload your brain too much with information as this can be counter productive. Once you have your idea stick with it and create the best possible design you can.

In the event that you hate dealing with this stuff you can as a last resort hire an interior decorator. You will be charged a fee for this but at least you can have somebody else do all the leg work for you. Plus they have keen eye for mixing and matching colors.

Architectural Terms and Meaning

Pavements

From antiquity to modern times, pavements take many forms; from simple flags of native stone to vast 'carpets' of limestone, terracotta, marble or mosaic.

As early as the 4th Century BC, Egyptian temples had vast areas of stone flooring - conveying godly power and permanence. Early Christianity continued the tradition, paving basilicas and churches with floors laden with secret symbolism. Landmark buildings have always used stone pavements to impress and to provide a durable surface for the passage of feet.

Through colour and pattern, pavements have also carried messages to those equipped to read them. Egyptian architects, for instance, portrayed mystic energies using geometric black and white stone. We can trace the development of this idea through history... black and white floors became icons of locations as diverse as Europe's great cathedrals, Flemish merchant houses and Masonic Halls. The meaning behind this and other designs is lost to many, but the aesthetics remain as vigorous as ever.

Pavements: Cosmati

A unique form of classical mosaic, Cosmati is extraordinarily decorative, with swirling bands of intricate stone and glass and gilded mosaic contrasted with highly polished white marble. Often used for pavements, Cosmati also decorates architectural elements such as walls and columns.

Inspired by Byzantine mosaic, Cosmati was a technique exclusive to three generations of the Cosma family, working in Rome from the 12th Century. Central to Romanesque architecture, fine examples of their work can be seen throughout Italy...but are concentrated in Rome where they had the patronage of the Pope.

Surprisingly though, London is home to two exceptional Cosmati floors. In 1269, the newly appointed Abbott of Westminster travelled to Rome and was dazzled by the richness of the mosaics. Returning to England, he commissioned workmen and materials from Italy to create Cosmati pavements for Westminster Abbey. The masterpiece is the 'Great Pavement' in front of the High Altar, completed in 1268.

Pavements: Opus-Sectile

Instead of being made up from small tesserae, Opus Sectile uses larger, specially-shaped elements in stone or tile. These are fitted together to create inlaid patterns or pictures on walls and floors.

Earliest examples of Opus Sectile work come from Ancient Egypt and Asia Minor. It reached an artistic height in Rome, from 4th- 6th Century, often used to create heroic images such as the chariot depicted in the basilica of the Roman Consul Junius Bassus..

Roman high fashion moved on and Opus Sectile moved East, becoming a feature of ornate Byzantine churches. It was not forgotten in Europe though, and by 12th Century, Opus Sectile techniques had become part of the vast repertoire of mosaic skills used by the Roman Cosmati family. Today, it is still practised by a very select few specialist craftsmen.

Safety Tips for Baby Furniture

Author: JB Anthony

Various baby furniture have various sets of safety precautions. However, there are a couple of common baby safety tips you should keep in mind in all furniture.

Placement of Furniture

Believe it or not, the spot where you place your baby furniture can help prevent accidents and injuries to your baby. Cribs for example should never be placed beside a low window or beside a heavy piece of furniture. A baby that is already on the standing phase might fall off from a window or might get crushed under a piece of furniture that might accidentally topple. Another example would be high chairs which should not be placed beside walls or counters since a baby could use these to kick off from and topple a high chair.

Furniture Knobs and Latches

A good baby furniture must be child-proof. Simple leg latches and strap locks of high chairs for example may be operated by a toddler or an older baby which may cause the straps to loosen or the high chair to collapse. Cribs too with side knobs may be tinkered with by a curious baby and cause a crib to collapse.

Age of Baby

Of course you should always be mindful of the applicability of a piece of furniture for your baby's age and weight. Most baby furniture pieces contain age and weight requirements. If you are unsure then simply use your common sense. Some changing tables and strollers will not be able to hold the weight of babies nearing the toddler stage.

Use baby brackets when your child begins to stand up. Brackets installed behind a piece of furniture and attached to the wall can help support furniture that could topple over a curious baby who attempts to scale cabinets and drawers.

Labels

Always check the labels of all baby furniture pieces. Although furniture sold in stores are supposed to be compliant with government safety standards, you should always make sure that your baby's furniture carriers the right label that says so. Warning labels are also another thing to look at. Warning labels will tell you how exactly should pieces of furniture be used and what you should not do with it.

Recalls

Watch out for model recalls. Although most baby furniture in the market are believed to be safe at the time that they are released to consumers, some product flaws are only discovered weeks or months after the release. Always have an ear and eye out for product recalls that may include your furniture model.

Specific Use

Manufacturers of your baby furnitures have kept your baby's safety in mind. You should always remember though that even the safest piece of furniture is intended for use with adult supervision. Never get tempted to let a piece of furniture baby sit your baby for you. Always keep an eye on your baby whether he is on a crib, playpen, high chair or just crawling on the rug on his own.

How to Get Rid of Cockroaches

Most people know that an infestation of cockroaches is not a good thing. They are dirty bugs that are very hard to get rid of. They are also sneaky and a phobia for many people. Fortunately there are many things you can do to help rid your home of cockroaches.

The only way to really get cockroaches out of your home is to follow a comprehensive plan. It requires that you are persistent and dedicated in your methods. You need to first get rid of their life supply, their food, hiding places and water sources.

To take away a cockroach's food source you will need to be very careful with how you handle food in your home. You should clean up spills immediately. Make sure to use soapy water and completely sweep up any food. Always keep food put away and tightly sealed. Keep your cabinets clean of food debris. Keep recyclables, like pop cans, outside and do the same with your garbage. Always wash and clean off the countertops, stove and table after use.

Hiding places of cockroaches can be almost anywhere since they can fit into tiny spaces. You will want to keep drawers clean and uncluttered. Do not use shelf paper or other lining in cabinets. Store unused clothing in tightly sealed containers. Store unused furniture outside. Repair cracks or other openings around pipes. Repair pealing wallpaper.

Water is a mainstay of cockroaches and you have to be sure they can not get to it. Fix leaks in pipes, keep drains clean and dry off the area around the sink after use. Any place that leaks water needs to be fixed and you should never have standing water in your home or the cockroaches will be drawn to it.

Taking away food, hiding spaces and water will really help to get rid of the cockroaches, but you may still need to try some traditional methods to make sure they are gone for good.

- Sprinkle boric acid around areas you have seen them.

- Try some homemade methods like mixing up a garden chemical, like Miracle Grow, in a spray bottle and spraying that in areas where you have seen them.

Getting rid of cockroaches is not an easy task. You may even have to call in a professional to really get them gone for good. However, if you are persistent and dedicated in your methods, you can usually overcome them.

Bathroom Tile Ideas

Bathrooms today are not limited in their tile choices to plain white, square, glazed ceramic tiles as they used to be. Today, there are literally thousands of different styles and sizes of bathroom tile ideas and choices. Ceramic is not the only material, either. Tiles are now readily available in travertine, sandstone, or marble just to name a few.

Tiles also come in a variety of sizes, which when pieced together can create quite a unique look. You can choose to tile the entire wall from floor to ceiling with both the same color and type of tile. Another option is to mix it up and have one color of tile on the bottom of the wall and another color towards the top separated by narrow, textured tile pieces that act as a chair rail.

Not only are there are thousands of different types of tiles, but there are dozens of colors of tile grout. This added versatility means that you could use the same tile on the floor as on the walls, but by changing the color of the grout, you can achieve two completely different effects.

Try to be unique when choosing the color and style of your tile, but remember that if you plan on selling your home in the next few years, you will want to create a room that is universally appealing. Since tile work is considered a more permanent décor, prospective homebuyers may be overwhelmed with the idea of having to replace an entire bathroom's tile work if you have chosen tiles in your favorite colors of pink and purple.

Another area that you can add some tile work to is the countertop. By adding tile here as well as the walls and floor, you can achieve a room that looks elegant and well put together. Choose tile in complementary colors, but vary the textures and the sizes of the tiles to please the eye and to add different layers.

Tiles make a wonderful choice for bathrooms because they are easily cleaned and sanitized and they are very hard to scratch or chip. If the proper cleaning products are used on them, they will remain shiny and new looking for decades. Try to choose colors and styles of tile that will serve as a great background and tiles that will allow you to change your bathroom décor without having to replace the tile. Don't be afraid of creating patterns or designs with contrasting colors or even tiles that are subtly different.

Every bathroom is different and will have different tile laying challenges. You can get thousands of bathroom tile ideas from searching through pictures on the Internet or from the countless home improvement books and magazines that are offered. You are sure to be able to find a look that will fit perfectly into your bathroom's décor.

About Retaining a Good Maid

Author: Aazdak Alisimo

There are many things you need to consider when getting cleaning services. The first of those is how to go about actually retaining a good maid.

A lot depends on whether you want to hire an individual or go with a company. There are some obvious advantages of going with a company. One is that they conduct their own interviewing process. This (hopefully) means that the professionals in their employ are well-suited for the task. Some offer money-back guarantees, which is nice if you are very particular about the way things are done. Companies also take care of taxes so you don't have to worry about filing them yourself. You can also see how long they have been in business, and check their status with the Better Business Bureau. Lastly, most carry worker's compensation insurance so you don't have to worry about being held liable for medical expenses should one of their employees be injured while on the job in your home.

There are advantages to hiring an individual as well. Individuals are often less expensive, as you can often negotiate costs with them. You have more control over how the cleaning is done as well. You can direct the individual on exactly how you like things to be done. Individuals are often more willing to take on extra tasks that a maid service would not provide (such as laundry or dishes). They are also more flexible with change - such as allowing you to change or cancel an appointment without charging you a hefty fee.

So now that you've decided whether to go with a service or an individual, how do you find one? Where do you look? If you are going with a company, check the phone book or do a simple search on the internet. For individuals, you can also look on the internet or ask friends, family members, or neighbors for recommendations.

Whether using an individual or an agency, there are key things you must do. First, check references. The maid (or service) should be able to give you names and numbers of several people who back up their work. Don't just take the numbers - actually call and check. Second, make sure a background check is conducted. You may not want someone in your home who has been convicted of a felony.

Another thing to consider is whether or not the individual or company is bonded and insured or whether they carry liability insurance. Ask for proof to be sent you and make sure the coverage is adequate enough to protect you and your belongings from damage or theft. Lastly, make sure you are comfortable. You are inviting these people into your home and you should feel at ease with them being there. If you don't, keep looking.

Virtual Fireplace Is Perfect For Any Room

Just imagine a cold, winter night. The wind is howling and the snow is flying outside the window. You are inside snuggled up in your warm blanket with a cup of hot chocolate and your favorite book. There is only one thing missing from this picture of serenity and warmth; the crackling and snapping of a fireplace.

But maybe you don't have a fireplace in your home. Maybe you live in a small apartment or rent a small home that does not have one. If this is the case and you really love the way a crackling fire sounds on those chilly winter nights, don't despair. You can have your very own virtual fireplace in your home.

The virtual fireplace is a DVD or CD that you can play on your TV or computer. This DVD will play a serene picture of a fireplace complete with all the snaps and crackles and pops, just like real firewood. If you look at this long enough you will be entranced just like you would if it were a real fire. It has that same stress reducing, relaxing quality that a real fireplace possesses.

Maybe you already have an old fireplace, but it is not in working order. There is a solution to this also. You can buy a monitor that is especially designed to fit as a fireplace insert. Just insert the DVD and you have a roaring, crackling fire to soothe you. This monitor is so discreet that your friends and family will not notice it unless you tell them.

Another nice aspect with these is that fact you have no messy wood or ashes to contend with. There is no risk of anyone getting burned. It is 100% safe around children and pets. Your fire can be "burning" 24 hours a day with no maintenance from you.

The virtual fireplace is a great way to add that special ambiance to your business also. Maybe you own a restaurant of a quaint bed and breakfast. Well, there you go. No worries about liabilities from patrons getting burned. It would also add to the décor any room in your business. Maybe you would like to just add one to your office to help you relax on those particularly stressful days at work.

What makes it so unique is that it is totally portable. It has the ability to be set up anywhere and the DVDs and Cds are not expensive.

So if you long for the look and sounds of a crackling fireplace on a cold winter night, consider a virtual fireplace. It is the perfect, no mess way to add a fireplace to any room in your home or office.

5 Ways to Save Money on Your Kitchen Cabinets

Author: Jason Delmar

When I first started looking at kitchen cabinets I was amazed at how expensive these things really were. Even the cheap cabinets cost more than I expected. After I realized that the cheap cabinets were not much more than particle board, I decided it was either spend a lot of money or I needed to find some other options. The answer was not at your local super mega store, it was online. Here are 5 quick suggestions I put together after searching long and hard for new cabinets for my kitchen.

1. Go online and look for kitchen cabinets. You can find the same cabinets you're your local store is offering, plus some custom manufacturers, RTA distributors, and you will able to get competitive prices. You will find that most of the cabinets are still expensive, but if you look for RTA cabinets, you are sure to find some good buys. If you don't know what an RTA cabinet is, it stands for Ready to Assemble. There is no need to worry, the ready to assemble literally means you will need a screw driver and that's it. All of the cabinets I bought came with one page of directions and I used my cordless drill, but it was not necessary, it was only to speed up the assembly.

2. Be careful what sites you're going to online. Do some research before deciding to buy from one site versus the other. Many of the on-line sites are just retail stores buying from someone else. If you can, try to find the company that is importing the cabinets. There are a lot of cabinet sites out there, and some will try to confuse you by changing the name of the cabinet so that they can sell it as a higher end cabinet. Some will offer "free shipping". Don't believe it, it will be free shipping, but they will mark up the cabinets enough to make up for their shipping costs.

3. Trust the quality of these cabinets. The good RTA sites import their cabinets from reliable sources that use all hardwood construction for the face frames and door, and they will use solid plywood for the sides. Most store cabinets consist of some part particleboard.

4. Compare what you would spend at a super store; add in the inconvenience of driving to the store, and the price of gas. Now compare that to the convenience of having the cabinets delivered to your door. Yes there are shipping costs, but even after those costs, I still saved hundreds on the cabinets.

5. Look at the options you have. When buying from a store, you will quickly find out that they carry very few of the cabinets. All others have to be "special ordered". With this special order comes a mark up for shipping and usually other charges as well. On the other hand, if you can find the RTA Cabinet sites that are importing their cabinets directly, they will carry all of the cabinets in stock. The importers can usually ship your cabinets in 3-5 days, not including transit times, so if you find a site that tells you 3-4 weeks they are probably just re-selling the cabinets.

So go online and look up an RTA kitchen cabinet site. Be careful of the mark ups on some of these sites and don't be afraid to ask questions. Prices vary and some costs are hidden, but in the end you will save a good amount of money.

The Bamboo Flooring

Bamboo flooring is a lovely addition to any room, but as is only fitting it does have its own set of pros and cons.

If you are looking for an alternative to traditional carpeting or wood flooring for your home, bamboo flooring is certainly a meritorious option. It certainly is a lovely option that fits into just about any type of décor very easily, but bamboo flooring isn't all good. As it is with any home improvement option, bamboo flooring does have its downsides. What is important is weighing out the difference between the advantages to having bamboo flooring installed in your home, and the disadvantages to having bamboo flooring installed in your home.

There are over 1,000 different species of bamboo on the planet, making them an interesting option for flooring. It is only the last couple of decades in which Americans have begun to rekindle their love for bamboo flooring, but at what cost?

It is only after examining the pros and cons of purchasing bamboo floors and having them installed in your home that you can truly be able to make a wise purchasing decision. To help you a little bit along your way, here are a couple facts about the pros and the cons of bamboo flooring.

The Good:

Bamboo symbolizes long life! Whether that means long life for your floor covering or long life to you, the home owner is still questionable. Either one will do just fine, won't it?

You can get bamboo flooring in more than one color. While any flooring type can be done in just about any color, there is more than one natural shade to bamboo and depending on its type, you may have a bit to choose from. The main two colors are the light brownish-blonde color that bamboo naturally comes in, and then a darker, more reddish hue of wood, similar to cherry wood.

Bamboo flooring is durable, and strong. This means it can hold up to you, the husband or wife, the kids, the dog, and yes--even the roller blades. Of course it doesn't seem like bamboo would be very strong, but not only is it a great deal stronger than Maple or Oak, but it is more pliable as well.

Bamboo flooring resists moisture and the wear and tear that insects and bugs cause exceptionally well. This means you won't have to worry about bugs crawling into and under your floor boards. While not everybody cares about this, bamboo flooring is also healthier for the environment. It can grow just about anywhere, and it does not damage the area that is left behind.

The Bad...And the Ugly...:

Bamboo is becoming more and more popular these days. This spurs an increase in production which almost always results in a lack of quality. This can go against almost all of the PROS listed above.

Although it is designed to last a while, bamboo flooring usually does not carry a very good warranty. This may be because the company does not offer it and for no other reason, but that calls the quality of the bamboo flooring into question.

The finishing material or liquid can sometimes be somewhat toxic to small animals and children, according to some studies that have been done. Apparently this is not so with regular wood flooring so to be on the safe side, double check all of the materials used with your bamboo flooring.

Bamboo flooring cannot be floated as well as other wood floors, which may present some problems. This depends on the bamboo and the durability of it as well as the quality of your flooring underneath.

In Conclusion

In conclusion, bamboo flooring is not all bad! It is just one of many options available to you as far as floor covering goes but it is not your only option. Weighing the pros and cons of bamboo flooring is the only way that you can go about making as informed a decision as you possibly can about whether or not bamboo flooring is the right type of flooring material for your needs. Who knows? Bamboo flooring may be the best decision you ever made for your flooring needs.
